look out hollywood

Last night we had an ear-splitting adventure...

Two of our friends got married last night.  We wanted to be there to support them, so we packed up the baby and the kitchen sink and took off for what we were told would be a two hour drive.  We decided it would be most prudent to leave three hours before the ceremony, with planned padding for us and the baby to have supper.

The funny thing is that we actually thought the wedding was going to be last Friday.  It was last Thursday before we realized that it indeed was a week later than we'd thought...  and just a few days ago before we found out that what we thought was a wedding that started at 7pm was actually a wedding that started at 6:30pm.  We had a good laugh at ourselves for that one -- imagine showing up on the wrong day -- or thirty minutes late because we had the time wrong.  Good thing the bride straightened us out both times because if we'd relied on the groom's intel, we would have shown up at the wrong time on the wrong day.

It ended up being a three and a half hour drive.  We pulled up to the church after the baby had screamed for almost the last hour.  The Hater ran inside to catch the vows and the tail-end of the ceremony.  I took the baby to the nursery to change her diaper, and before we were finished, the wedding was over.

Shortly after we greeted the bride and groom in the receiving line, the baby started crying again.  There weren't enough chairs in the reception hall for all of the attendees, so we ended up taking the baby into an empty Sunday School classroom.  About that time it was time for her to eat again...  so I took her back to the nursery to nurse her.

At this point we'd been at the festivities for an hour before deciding that we should just go back home.  So we said our goodbyes and drove three and a half hours back to OKC, wondering out loud to ourselves two major things -- first, what were we thinking taking this baby on a road trip -- second, how could the groom have such bad intel??

As the baby screamed without consolation, we questioned the ability to successfully make future road trips.  We talked about how it was almost cruel to strap her into a seat and make her scream just so that someone else can see her scream at a later time.  Crazy.  We may force another "test run" road trip before trying the real thing again.

On a brighter note, baby's future really is so bright...  We would say that Hollywood should be on the look-out, but there's no way we could make that trip right now.

all work and no play makes jack a dull boy

Mommy says that even though it's a holiday weekend I still have to work and hold my head up.

Sometimes I'm happy to oblige her...

... sometimes not so much...

We're playing hard this weekend.  We have special visitors from Las Vegas, including Angry Dissenter in the flesh.  He and The Hater were playing Mortal Kombat, but now they've moved on to Fallout.

Baby is currently konked out after a full morning of holding her head up and tummy time.  She slept nearly well last night, so Mommy has almost recovered from the two nights preceding that one.

Someone is ready for another trip to the buffet and another round of play time...

sittin' up and takin' names

That's right.  That's a brand-spanking new onesie because this 7 week porker (8 wks tomorrow) has officially outgrown her 0-3 month clothes.  Good thing for us - we were given a ton of 0-3 month stuff for her at showers, so she won't have to go nekkid for a while yet.

We decided to get out her seat yesterday.  She's still a bobblehead from time to time, but she's gotten much better at controlling her head.  She loved the seat for about 5 minutes, which is better than how much time we usually get out of her for tummy time play, which we usually hope for three minutes...

Someone's awake and being very perky.  Gonna cut this short so we can play.

tired

I'm back to work this week.  Who knew that I could learn to function on about four hours of sleep and work at the same time - multiple days in a row at that.  (Thank goodness I'm not charged to pass meds right now.  Not so sure that would be safe!)  Usually by 3pm my brain turns to jam and I mostly just take up space until its' time to leave.  But so far so good!

I'm able to pump breast milk at work.  I'm trying to do that every two and a half to three hours.  I've rented a double-barrel breast pump, which you can imagine makes things much more efficient to get through.  (This math genius figures that it cuts the time it was taking with a single pump in half.  I know.  You should be amazed that I'm even able to write a complete sentence right now, much less compute such complicated equations.)

I can remember going to class or a clinical or taking a test on about as much sleep.  (Although that would've been after four consecutive hours of sleep, which I'll argue was way better than four intermittent, interrupted hours of sleep.)  I remember it bothering me then, but it was usually okay because I could either take a nap that afternoon to catch back up - or I could just go to bed early that night.

Unfortunately, neither of those options are possible for us right now.

The Hater tickled me yesterday.  He called me at work yesterday morning to tell me he was tired.  This was after an especially trying night with a screaming baby who just couldn't give up the goat to go to sleep.  I was really amused that he wanted to tell me he was tired.  I bit my tongue and didn't tell him that his body would get more used to it after about six weeks...  :)

Last night was better for the baby, who I realize still has yet to receive a blogger pseudonym.  (Suggestions, anyone?  It's hard now because it has to be something timeless that she can grow into...  and "Precious" is just way too hokey.)  I'm sure she slept better because she got a bath that sufficiently konked her out.

Time for work.  I hope everyone has a fantastic day!

it's official

It wouldn't be an appropriate first Mother's Day without getting pooped on.

Thanks for making it everything it's wrapped up to be.

the zombies are coming

ZOMBIES

Thank you, One Alpha, for this important news tip!

If you see walking dead people, don't stick around long enough to ask them if they have the mutated swine flu.  Your best bet is to run for your underground lair in the mountains that you've already stocked with rations, weapons and ammo, medical supplies, and your Zombie Survival Handbook.

Meanwhile, if we all live through this pandemic, I think baby might should be a zombie for Halloween this year...

heat wave

Apparently we've been baking the baby, and she has a nice ring of heat rash around her neck to prove it.  I think this is brought on by a combination of her getting better at regulating her own temperature and my own lack of a properly working internal thermostat.

I know that I'm supposed to dress her in the same kind of layers that I'm wearing, but apparently that's too much.  So I've been emailing friends who have similarly aged babies to see what they're dressing the kids in at night*.  With these responses, we decided to let the kid sleep in a short sleeved sleeper, no socks, and semi-swaddled in a cotton blanket under her armpits (she likes to have her arms outside of the constriction now).

I just knew she'd freeze to death.  I was cold just looking at her.  But every time she woke up her arms weren't the popsicles that I'd expected.

I've not gotten to inspect the rash yet today.  We've not moved from low-light to awake-lights yet.  But when we do I'm anxious to see how it's looking.  Surely it's gotten better if we didn't roast her through the night.

*  Incidentally, our friends' baby also has heat rash right now.  It's good to know ours isn't the only easy-bake-baby on the block.

playing dress up

I'm a wiggle worm when Mommy wants me to pose- so you can hardly tell that my dress has lady bugs on them.
